Guide for class 10 students

Arts (Humanities) After 10th: Subjects and Careers

Arts, also called Humanities, is about people, societies, ideas and expression. If you like reading, writing, discussing, or making creative work, it offers the widest choice of subjects of any stream.

What you study

With English, you choose about four subjects from those your school offers. Common ones include:

  • History
  • Political Science
  • Geography
  • Economics
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Languages and literature
  • Fine Arts or Music
  • Home Science
  • Maths

Where Arts can lead

  • Degrees: BA in subjects such as History, Political Science, English, Psychology, Sociology, Economics and Geography, many through CUET UG.
  • Law: five-year BA LL.B through CLAT, AILET or university tests.
  • Design and media: B.Des (through tests such as NID DAT, NIFT or UCEED), journalism, mass communication, animation and film.
  • Psychology and social work: counselling and clinical psychology later need a master's degree, and social work leads to work with NGOs and communities.
  • Teaching and public service: teaching (a B.Ed after your degree), and government exams like the UPSC Civil Services, which are open to graduates of any subject.
  • Also: hotel management, tourism, languages and translation, museums and archives.

Questions students ask

Is Arts only for students with low marks?
No. That is an old myth. Arts suits students who enjoy reading, writing, ideas and people, and it leads to law, psychology, economics, design, media, teaching and public service.
Can I prepare for the civil services after Arts?
Yes. The UPSC Civil Services exam is open to graduates of any subject. Subjects like History, Political Science, Geography and Economics overlap with parts of the syllabus, which some students find useful.
Can I take Maths in Arts?
Often, yes. Many boards, including CBSE, let you add Maths to Humanities subjects if your school offers that combination. It is useful for Economics, Psychology research and data-related work.
What can I do after Arts besides a BA?
Integrated law (BA LL.B), design (B.Des), journalism and mass communication, hotel management, social work, and many professional courses that accept any stream.
