Guide for class 10 students

After 10th: Your Options and How to Choose a Stream

Finishing class 10 is the first time you get a real say in what you study. You don't need to have your whole career planned. You only need to pick a direction that suits what you enjoy, and every direction here keeps plenty of doors open.

Your main options

How to choose, in four steps

  1. 1Notice what you enjoyWhich subjects or activities make time fly? Interest matters more than which stream is popular.
  2. 2Look two steps aheadRead what each stream leads to: the degrees, the entrance exams and the kind of work. You don't need one dream job, just a few that sound good.
  3. 3Check what your school offersSubject combinations differ by school and board. Many boards, including CBSE, let you mix subjects, such as Maths with Humanities or Psychology with Science.
  4. 4Talk it throughShare what you've found with your parents, a teacher or a school counsellor. Ask people who studied that stream what it was really like.

A few myths, cleared up

  • “Arts is for students who can't do Science.” Not true. Arts leads to law, psychology, economics, design, journalism and the civil services, and it is demanding in its own way.
  • “Commerce is only for future accountants.” Commerce also leads to business, economics, marketing, banking, law and design.
  • “Science is the only safe choice.” Science is great if you enjoy it. Picking it only because it feels safe can make class 11 and 12 very hard work.
  • “A diploma or ITI is a dead end.” Diploma holders can join many B.Tech courses in the second year, and ITI trades lead to paid apprenticeships and skilled jobs.

Studying through open school

If regular school isn't right for you just now, the National Institute of Open Schooling lets you study class 11 and 12 with flexible exams. Its certificates are recognised for further study. See nios.ac.in or your state's open school board.

Questions students ask

Is one stream better than the others?
No. Science, Commerce, Arts and diplomas each lead to good degrees and careers. The best stream is the one whose subjects you will enjoy studying for two years, because interest is what keeps you going.
Should I choose a stream because my friends are taking it?
Friends matter, but you will sit the classes and exams on your own. Look at the subjects themselves and where they lead. You will make new friends in class 11 whichever stream you pick.
What if I choose the wrong stream?
It is more common than you think, and it can be fixed. Some schools allow a change early in class 11. Many degrees, such as law, BBA, journalism and design, accept students from any stream after class 12.
Do my class 10 marks decide my stream?
Schools sometimes set cut-offs for a stream when seats are limited, so your marks can matter for admission. They do not decide what you are good at or where you can go in life.
Can I study after class 10 without going to a regular school?
Yes. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and state open schools let you study class 11 and 12 at your own pace, and a polytechnic diploma or ITI course is another full-time option after class 10.
