Guide for class 10 students

Science After 10th: PCM, PCB and PCMB Explained

Science is for students who like asking how things work and enjoy problem-solving. In class 11 and 12 you study Physics and Chemistry, plus Maths, Biology or both. That choice is what PCM, PCB and PCMB mean.

PCM, PCB and PCMB

PCM

Physics, Chemistry, Maths

For engineering, architecture, pure sciences, computing, NDA (all wings) and flying.

PCB

Physics, Chemistry, Biology

For medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, life sciences and agriculture.

PCMB

All four

Keeps both sets of doors open, with a heavier workload.

You also study English, and usually pick one more subject, such as Computer Science, Informatics Practices, Physical Education, Economics or a language, depending on what your school offers.

Where PCM can lead

  • Engineering (B.Tech / B.E.): through JEE Main, JEE Advanced (for the IITs), BITSAT and state entrance tests or counselling.
  • Architecture (B.Arch): through NATA or JEE Main Paper 2.
  • B.Sc: Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Statistics, Computer Science, Electronics and more, often through CUET UG.
  • Computing: BCA and B.Sc Computer Science.
  • Defence: the NDA exam, where the Air Force and Navy wings need Physics and Maths in class 12.
  • Also open: merchant navy, pilot training, and every Commerce or Arts degree that accepts any stream.

Where PCB can lead

  • Medicine and dentistry (MBBS, BDS): admission is through NEET UG.
  • AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS) and veterinary science: also through NEET UG for most seats.
  • Nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy and allied health: through NEET UG, state tests or college admissions, depending on the course and state.
  • B.Sc: Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Food Science and more.
  • Agriculture: B.Sc Agriculture and related courses, through CUET UG for many central seats and state tests for others.

See the exams overview for when each test usually happens.

An honest look

Good things

  • Keeps the widest range of degrees open, including ones outside science.
  • Good if you enjoy experiments, logic and problem-solving.
  • Many careers in technology, health and research start here.

Things to know

  • The syllabus is big and moves fast in class 11.
  • Top engineering and medical seats are very competitive.
  • If you choose it only because others expect you to, it can feel hard to keep going.

Questions students ask

Can I do engineering if I take PCB?
Almost all B.Tech and B.E. courses, and JEE Main for them, need Physics, Chemistry and Maths in class 12, so PCB alone keeps most engineering closed. If you might want engineering, take Maths.
Do I need Maths for NEET UG?
No. NEET UG asks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Biotechnology) with English in class 12. Maths is not needed.
Is PCMB a good idea?
It keeps both medicine and engineering open, which helps if you are truly undecided. It also means four heavy subjects, so choose it only if you enjoy both Maths and Biology.
Do I have to join coaching for JEE or NEET?
No. Coaching is a choice, not a rule. Many students prepare with their school classes, the official syllabus and previous years' papers. What matters most is steady practice.
Can I move to Commerce or Arts subjects after Science?
Yes. After class 12 Science you can apply to most B.Com, BBA, BA, law and design courses. Science students switch fields all the time.
