Guide for class 10 students
Commerce After 10th: Subjects, Courses and Careers
Commerce is about how money, businesses and markets work. If you like planning, numbers in real life and the idea of running something one day, it is worth a close look.
What you study
Accountancy
Recording and reading a business's money: ledgers, balance sheets, partnerships and companies.
Business Studies
How organisations are run: management, marketing, finance and the people side.
Economics
Why prices rise and fall, how the economy works, and how governments make choices.
Along with English, you usually choose Maths (or Applied Maths, where your board offers it) or another subject such as Informatics Practices, Entrepreneurship, Physical Education or a language.
Where Commerce can lead
- Degrees: B.Com, B.Com (Hons), BBA, BMS, and BA or B.Sc Economics, many through CUET UG or college admissions.

Questions students ask
- Should I take Maths in Commerce?
- If you are comfortable with it, yes. Many Economics degrees and some B.Com (Hons) and BBA courses ask for Maths in class 12, and it helps with statistics, finance and data work later. Without Maths, B.Com, BBA, CA, CS and law are still open.
- Do I need Commerce to become a Chartered Accountant?
- No. Students from any stream can take the CA route through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). Commerce helps because you will already know accountancy basics.
- Is Commerce easier than Science?
- It is different, not easier. Accountancy needs regular practice, and Economics has its own theory and graphs. It suits students who like numbers used in real life.
- Can I do law after Commerce?
- Yes. Five-year integrated law courses such as B.Com LL.B and BBA LL.B accept students from any stream, usually through CLAT, AILET or a university's own test.
